This testing procedure was developed by the United States Department of Energy and has been used by NASA and the EPA. It is performed with a series of instruments including an "Infiltrometer Blower Door" which is attached to a computer system that analyses the "tightness" of your home. It allows our trained technician to find out how much and where both "clean air" and "dirty air" are entering your home.
Every house needs to "breathe" but too much air, especially if it is contaminated air, is bad for your pocketbook and your health. This test will produce a report that shows exactly how much fresh air should be entering your house and how much actually is. The next step is to determine where that air is coming from.
If air is entering your house through leaks in your heating and cooling air distribution system (duct system), the problems are even worse. Duct systems create a vacuum as the air moves through the duct which sucks "bad air" into the duct system and then blows it throughout your home. If the duct system is in the attic, the air will be contaminated by insulation particles. If the duct system is located in a crawl space or basement, it will be contaminated by mold, dust, pollen, and other allergens. Good filters will catch some of the contaminated air but a good portion of it will be deposited on your floors and furniture and some of it will be deposited in your lungs as you breathe.
